When exploring behaviors, the presence of shame and helplessness often become barriers to helping a child learn from their own experience, understand the impact of their behaviors on those around them, maintain intimacy, and develop the new skills necessary to obtain healthy relationships. We will present a five step process designed to teach children and parents the skills needed to repair poor choices and avoid the buildup of negative feelings, which reinforce a negative self view. This process also presents a clinical structure that helps the clinical team recognize the areas of growth as well as identify and address barriers to change.Participants will: 1) Learn the five steps of the repair process and how to incorporate this into the clinical and home environment; 2) Better understand the destructive impact of shame and helplessness, how it is used to reinforce negative self beliefs, and ways to counteract its impact; 3) Participants will learn how to access and assist the families that may get stuck in practices that trigger shame and helplessness and give them tools that will encourage the development of self-esteem; and, 4) Participants will learn ways to rebuild intimate relationships by reshaping family member's roles and perspectives in a way that each member feels more valuable and safe in the relationship.
