Part 1: This workshop will explore treatment challenges in providing a "secure base" for both the parent(s)) and the parent-child relationship in attachment-focused therapy. These challenges, poorly handled, can result in frustration, triangulation, and termination of therapy, yet handled well can also become opportunities for a potent therapeutic alliance. Core concepts and case examples included. Part 2: This workshop will include a number of guided self-reflective and experiential activities that provide concrete examples of how to work with the concepts previewed in Part 1.
Participants will: 1) Recognize the unique challenges of developing and sustaining a therapeutic alliance with both the parent(s)) and the child in attachment-focused therapy; 2) Identify the points of connection between the parallel processes of the child's healing journey; 3) Identify and resolve stuck points for the child, parent(s)), and the therapist; 4) Understand the power of reframing and transforming pain into meaning that sustains investment in the therapeutic process; 5) Identify issues for treatment as well as for supervision; 6) Identify a range of experiential activities that can help integrate the theory with emotional and attitudinal change.
